Dossier Guidelines
The dossier for review for reappointment and/or promotion is a curated description and record of evidence of your work as a faculty member. It consists of:
- Your complete CV
- A professional narrative and appendix of evidence in the three categories of evaluation:
- Teaching
- Research, scholarship and creative or professional practice
- Leadership and service
The dossier should be clearly organized and carefully curated to communicate the substance, value, quality and contributions of your work to those both within and outside your field(s). Both the narrative and selected evidence should tell the story of your work as a faculty member.
The dossier should be as short as it can be while making the strongest case for your reappointment or promotion. It should speak to your work since your last review. Exceedingly long professional narratives and appendices should be avoided and will be returned to the faculty. The dossier should be clean, clear, easy to read and easy to navigate. People reading your dossier are doing so in support of their professions and of the university; their time and effort should be respected. Professional narratives are generally 10-20 pages; they should not exceed 20 pages. The dossier should not contain everything you’ve ever done, but rather a selection of work that is representative of your expertise and your experience. In extreme cases, college dean’s offices may reject submitted dossiers if the dossier format guidelines are not met, e.g., the table of contents, length and overall organization and presentation are inconsistent with the university’s dossier format guidelines. Deans’ offices do not review for quality, merely format, and acceptance of the dossier by the dean’s office does not connote anticipation of a successful review.
Tenure dossiers should speak to the period of first appointment at The New School to the moment of tenure review, with emphasis on the period between the post-probationary review and the tenure review. Promotion reviews should privilege the period since the most recent prior review. Dossiers for a first review may address work prior to initial appointment at The New School. For complete information refer to the Dossier Guidelines_Overview and Detail.
